First and foremost, a big big thank you to everyone who showed up for the last dinner and workday back in October. We've had some fantastic feedback from people attending, and from L'arche who were very happy with what you all accomplished. Thank you!
Now, for this month's dinner, we're going for a Christmas special! Details are as follow:
Time: 7 pm
Venue: 16 Carolan Road (the home of the lovely Rachel Bergin who again has generously offer to provide space)
This will be the last dinner before Christmas, so even though Christmas Eve and Day are almost a full month away, this will still be our chance to wish each other a happy holiday and share a meal with a flavour of our Christmas traditions.
Now, the ethos of the Small Dinner remains unchanged. At its heart, its still simply a chance for all of us to get together in community to share a meal, some fun and good conversation. Yet, following last months dinner/workday with L'arche and the previous get-together out at Helen's Bay, it also seems that we have all welcomed and enjoyed the opportunity to learn about and take part in other people's work. So, for this month we want to keep that format and, inspired by the Christmas spirit, support a new exciting initiative called justXchange, headed up by long-time-small-dinnerite Jayne McConkey.
On its website (http://justxchange.org/), justXchange describes itself as "an exchange system based on the currency of time, where your hour equals my hour. It is based on timebanking concepts. The idea is that everybody has something to offer, and something they could use help with. Rather than adding some monetary value to the services we can offer, we choose to value everyone's time equally. So your hour equals my hour."
So, in other words, justxchange is trying to create an alternative to the formalised economic system where money is the only currency to instead replace this with time as the basis for exchange. This idea is as radical as it is genius! The concept that justXchange is based upon, timebanking, is not a new invention but rather a system that has been tried and tested elsewhere before. What justXchange does is to bring this idea to Belfast and Northern Ireland in a way that it hasn't existed before.
On the day of the Small Dinner, we will have people around to share some more information and stories from justxchange. We will also have laptops available for people who wish to sign up to the justXchance website.
As always, if you wish to come around can you please RSVP no later than Wednesday the 24th of November. Again folks, please remember to let us know if you are coming around as it really helps planning these events!
