Event Description

Knowledge is power, so one of the main aims of this introductory session is to empower through sharing and creating knowledge. 'Economics' is one of the most powerful forms of knoweldge that is shaping our lives today and also shaping how the world and planet will be in the future. Given the 'triple crunch' we are now facing in terms of the economic/finanical crisis, the climate crisis and peak oil/energy insecurity, what we need is not just a greener, more sustainable economy, but new ways of thinking about the economy, that is, new ideas about economics.

This workshop aims to
1. Introduce the idea of dominant understandings of economics and how the economy is discussed in the media, by mainstream politics, as just one way of understanding the economy
2. To demonstrate that this economic knowledge and commonsense view of the economy is not scientific, objective or neutral, but deeply political and ethical
3. To introduce some alternative understandings of the ecomony based around green ideas of sustainability, femininist ideas about what is left out of orthodox economic thinking, and long-standing green arguments for an economics of well-being and quality of life rather than debt-based consumerism
4. Above all the need for us all to develop our own views about the economy rather than seeing this as something that only 'experts' can do...the economy is simply too important to be left to 'economists'!
